Don't Make These Mistakes When You Decide To Wear A Wig

by Grace Wallace

You may be thinking about wearing a wig for a long list of reasons. Perhaps you've recently lost your hair due to cancer or another health issue, or maybe you just prefer keeping your hair closely cropped but like the idea of changing your appearance periodically with the help of a wig. Regardless of your reason for wearing a wig, you generally don't want to broadcast the fact that that hair on your head is indeed a wig. Some people make a series of simple mistakes that can make their use of the wig more evident. Here are some things to avoid when you wear a wig.

Pulling It Too Low On Your Forehead

Many people don't like the idea of a receding hairline, which can compel them to position their wig too low on their forehead. So when you pull the wig onto your head, it may be tempting to pull the front down — especially if you're not fond of having a large, visible forehead. In this position, however, it can be obvious that you're wearing a wig. That's because, for many people, their hairline doesn't begin just an inch or so above their eyebrows. Instead, position the wig farther back on your head to give it more of a natural look.

Opting For Synthetic Over Natural

When you're shopping for a wig, you might favor the idea of finding one made of synthetic fibers instead of natural hair fibers. The former type is generally less expensive, which might lead you to believe that it's an ideal product for those new to wigs. While many synthetic wigs can indeed look good, some lower-end products have a shine that doesn't seem realistic — and this look can easily broadcast the fact that you're wearing a wig. Instead, shop around to find one made of natural hair, as you'll likely be happier with the look.

Using The Wig Without Altering It

Don't make the mistake of wearing the wig straight off the shelf and assuming that it's perfect for your head. Each head has a different size and shape, so it's a good idea to plan on customizing your wig. This doesn't mean taking a pair of scissors to it yourself. A better idea is to visit your hairstylist with the wig. He or she will talk to you about the appearance you want and trim the wig appropriately to achieve this goal.
