5 Big Skin Irritants for Newborns

by Grace Wallace

As a parent to a newborn, there are many things to be aware of, including your baby's sensitive skin. During this early part of your baby's life, their skin is so delicate that it can easily develop rashes that can be uncomfortable and when a newborn is uncomfortable, it means less sleep, which is definitely not ideal when you have a newborn on your hands especially. Here are five of the biggest skin irritants to be aware of:

Overheating: Be aware of how warm your baby is. While you want to bundle them up during the colder times of the year, it's important to remove layers of that bundling when you put your baby in the car or bring them inside. You should also be extremely cautious of the bath water temperature as it should be lukewarm. In the summer, you should also keep clothing light to prevent a heat rash.

Dry Air: Dry air is another common problem causing the skin to dry out more easily. This is why it's recommended to have a humidifier in baby's room. Baby should also be wearing light clothing to bed so that the skin to breathe.

Clothing: It's highly recommended that you choose organic baby bodysuits and other organic cotton clothing for baby. The reason being that cotton is smooth against the skin and does not scratch and irritate it. You will notice your baby will appear super comfortable in their cotton clothing and thus sleep better. You should also be aware of other clothing like materials, such as blankets, socks, and more. Organic cotton is best for all of these items. You can find organic baby bodysuits through services like Baby Sawyer.

Detergents: When you clean your baby's clothing, it's recommended that you use something that is dye-free and free from many other chemicals that are found in generic detergents. These chemically laced detergents can make the use of organic cotton null, thus not allowing your baby to reap the benefits of this material against their skin.

Diapers and Wipes: While many parents are trying out cloth diapers nowadays to help with the issue of skin irritation, you can still use regular diapers, but they should be made to be gentle and soft. When it comes to wipes, you should be using those that are sensitive and non scented.

When you know what skin irritants to look out for, you can know what to stock up on for your newborn baby, as well as what to ask for when you host your baby shower. Don't forget to highlight that you are looking for organic cotton clothing for baby.
